ANCIENT OLYMPIA
Welcome to Ancient Olympia: A Journey to the birthplace of the Olympic Games
Julia , the Olympia guide.
Dear visitor, my name is Julia and I am a licensed tour guide. I have studied History of Greek Culture , a degree that covers all the basic cultural sectors , such as history, history of art, literature, theatre, philosophy etc.
In 2002 I graduated from Greece’s school for tour guides and since then I started offering guiding services for many areas all over Greece, in Greek, English, German and Italian .
It is my privilege and pleasure to be able to guide visitors and show them my country. During my tours I combine information about place's history, archaeology, customs, local cuisine, nature and everyday life .
The Greek heritage and culture is very fascinating, and that is what I always try to present to my guests during the few hours that we share.
I feel honored and happy to have the opportunity to lead visitors and introduce them to the land I cherish and hold in high regard. The richness of Greek heritage and culture never fails to captivate me, and it's my goal to share this with my guests during the brief time we spend together. Julia
What we offer
We provide personalized local tours for individuals and small groups at the ancient site and museum of Olympia. Upon arrival in Olympia, our recommended highlights include the Archaeological Museum, also known as the New Museum, and the Ancient Olympic Games site.
At the Ancient Olympic Games site, you'll encounter various remnants of significant structures, such as the gymnasium, the palaestra, the circular Philipeion, Phidias's workshop where the renowned gold and ivory statue of Zeus was crafted, the temples of Zeus and Hera, the altar where the modern Olympic torch is lit, and the ancient Olympic stadium.
With a seating capacity of around 45,000 spectators, this stadium hosted the ancient Greek athletes competing for the prestigious olive wreath, a symbol of great honor in antiquity. Visitors even have the opportunity to run along the original track, following in the footsteps of ancient Olympic champions.
Inside the archaeological museum, you'll find an array of artifacts excavated from the site, including bronze and clay offerings, armor, pottery, tools, and cups from Phidias's workshop. Notable sculptures include the exquisite Hermes by Praxiteles, the Nike by Paeonios, and remarkably well-preserved classical statues from the temple of Zeus's pediments.
For a comprehensive guided tour of both the site and museum with a licensed guide, approximately 2.5 hours are recommended, leaving additional time for personal exploration and photography. Alternatively, after enjoying a guided tour of the site, which typically takes about 1.5 hours, visitors can opt to explore the museum independently.
The tours are offered in German and Italian as well.
